What Is a Macchiato?

Admittedly, I’m not really known to be a coffee connoisseur, but coffee is definitely one of my favorite smells and I love experimenting with all the different kinds of coffee drinks and flavors. A macchiato is typically a small drink with two shots of espresso, so a strong coffee that is topped with a layer of frothy, steamed milk. It may sound intimidating to make your own, but it’s really not as daunting as it seems, especially when you’re using a quality espresso machine like the Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine with Grinder and Dual Thermolock.

How To Make This Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato

First, you’ll need the Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine. This is the best machine to make fast, premium coffeeshop-level espresso drinks at home. The Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine with Grinder and Dual Thermolock uses precise grinding and even heating for great tasting espresso with a conical burr mill grinder featuring 30 adjustable grind settings for fresh espresso with every use.

The Temp iQ system features thermoblock heating technology and PID temperature control to evenly heat during the espresso extraction, combined with gentle pre-infusion to bloom the espresso grounds at the beginning of the extraction.

The powerful steam wand produces creamy froth and microfoam milk for cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos and more! With this machine, you become the barista!

The Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine has it all… an easy fill water tank, a cup warming tray brings cups to perfect temperature for espresso-ready cups, a sleek stainless-steel design for durability and style and all the accessories: stainless steel milk jug, tamper, single and dual wall filter baskets (1-shot and 2-shot), cleaning pin and brush.

Make the apple “syrup”. You’ll do this by simmering peeled diced apples, maple syrup, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and water in a small saucepan until it becomes fragrant and absorbs the apple and spice flavors. This will take about 30 minutes. To make the syrup with a stronger flavor let the mixture steep longer. Strain the syrup and set aside. You can enjoy the leftover apples as applesauce or maybe in your oatmeal, yum! No food waste here! 😉

You can make the apple syrup ahead of time and store it in the fridge for when you’re ready to make the macchiato. I’m also one of those coffee drinkers that likes to add sweetness to the drink, so this is perfect to replace the sugar you might normally add with a hint of apple spice flavors.

Add 1-2 tablespoons of the apple syrup to the bottom of the cup/glass you’re using.

Next, grind one shot of espresso for this macchiato. Grind the coffee and use the machine to extract the shot of espresso. There are great instructional videos on how to use the Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine on the Calphalon website.

Then tamp your shot with the included tamper.

Brew the shot. I selected 1 shot for my espresso, I prefer a lighter coffee, but you can do 2 shots if preferred.

Steam the oat milk. Using the steel milk jug and the steam wand, froth 4 ounces of oat milk. Typically you’ll only use about 1 ounce for a macchiato, but it’s difficult to steam just 1 ounce of milk without burning it, so 4 ounces is much easier.

Pour or spoon the steamed milk into the espresso. You’ll want to use about 2 tablespoons of the steamed milk, but you can use more if you’d like. That’s the benefit of being your own barista 😉

If you want to add a dollop of dairy-free whipped cream and drizzle of vegan caramel sauce over top go for it! You can choose to stir the macchiato for a more uniform flavor- my suggestion if you want the full apple crisp-like flavor.

Tips For a Great Macchiato

☆ Use a quality espresso machine. I highly recommend the Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine with Grinder and Dual Thermolock. You can find this espresso machine exclusively on Amazon.

☆ Quality coffee is key. Don’t go to the store and buy the cheapest bag of coffee beans. And don’t use ground coffee. Get the full experience and grind it fresh.

☆ Enjoy the macchiato right away. Because it’s such a small drink it cools quickly, so be sure to enjoy it as soon as it’s ready.

☆ I’m using espresso shot glasses, but you can use any mug or glass to enjoy this macchiato.

☆ Head to the Calphalon website for more great tips!

Description

Now you can make this popular coffee chain copycat Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato at home with a simple homemade apple syrup, freshly ground coffee, and a shot of steamed oat milk using the Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine! This fragrant, delicious fall-inspired coffee is perfect for coffee lovers and is made dairy-free and gluten-free.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Apple Syrup

  • 2 medium apple, peeled and diced small
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup water

Macchiato

  • 12 shots espresso
  • 4 ounces oat milk

Optional Toppings

  • dairy-free whipped cream
  • cinnamon
  • vegan caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Make the apple syrup first. Add the finely diced apple to a medium saucepan along with the maple syrup, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and water. Let the mixture reduce over medium-high heat until the apples soften and the liquid is infused with the spices and apple flavor. This will take about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and then strain the syrup.*
  2. Add 1-2 tablespoons of apple syrup in the bottom of the glass.
  3. Pull one or two shots of espresso. Do this by grinding the coffee, tamping and extracting 1 or 2 shots of espresso using the Calphalon® Temp IQ Espresso Machine. I only used one shot because I prefer a weaker macchiato.
  4. Steam the oat milk. Using the steel milk jug, froth 4 ounces of oat milk. You will only use about an ounce of it for the macchiato topping, but it's hard to steam less than 4 ounces of milk without burning it.
  5. Spoon or pour the steamed milk into the espresso. You can add as much as you'd like, but 1 ounce equals about 2 tablespoons.
  6. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, dairy-free whipped cream, or vegan caramel sauce if desired and enjoy right away.

Notes

*You can make the apple syrup ahead of time and store in your fridge for when you're ready to use it. For a stronger apple flavor, let the syrup steep longer. Try using the leftover apples as applesauce or on top of oatmeal!
